Hello, I have a question on the connection between the Nasi and the Coronel. There is a claim that Joseph Nasi was part of the Coronel family and then it is noted that a Francisco Coronel, born in Segovia, was made Governor of Naxos by Joseph Nasi. This is then also noted in the Jewish Virtual Library based on the Cecil Roth. It also seems to claim the family Coronello from the Coronel. I first c...

Dear All, I am after some assistance with the Musaphia family. I am researching Moses Musaphia, d.1643, Amsterdam. I am after any record of parentage and marriage. On his burial card, Moses’ alias is Simon Mendes. I am not sure how this was established. It would be good to know if there are any relevant records that refer to this. A lot of online trees place Moses as the brother of Benjamin Musaph...

Hello all, I have mentioned the de Cordova before but I have not been able to sense check the Oudekerk record on which I think most rely for their lineage. I attach the burial record for Haham Moses ben Isaac de Cordova, buried in 1649. The record states his full name is Moses Raphael ben Isaac de Cordova and that he us from Constantinople. It also says that Jacob Haim de Cordova is his son. As su...

Evening All, I am trying to determine if this Salomon Salon /Salom Da Rocha was the father of Sara Salomon da Rocha b.1653 who was married to Solomon Isaac Senior Saraiva Coronel. Could anyone please have a look at the bann and tell me if there is any further detail about Salomon or his mother, both presumably from Bayonne. Thanks.Jeremy

Good morning, Does anyone have info on the following marriages of the Senior Coronel, these are largely before Amsterdam so a bit less messy but I am unable to find info some of the wives in question and would be grateful for the help...Inigo Lopez Coronel, born in Segovia in 1471, lived in Seville and was married, I think, to Maria or Gracia Ruiz. Any idea which or whether this is correct?Francis...

Any *good* narrative book recommendations focused on any time from the Golden Era to the Expulsion to Amsterdam to the New World that are not Rembrandt's Jews or The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon? Does not need to be non-fiction.

Good morning all, shabbat shalom. In the book Reluctant Cosmopolitans the author discusses name changes of the Sephardim to fit the local taste. One such example is the Keizer / Kyser / Kijeser family who he suggests were the de Caceras family. This is interesting for me as my ancestors by this name were Sephardic and married with the de Cordova from Constantinople (the Rabbi and publisher family)...

Dear All, I am glad to write again in the group. I have a fairly non specific question that I hope may pique someone’s interest in the group. I am interest in the family d’Aguilar who arrived to Amsterdam. I should note that as far as I can tell this is not the same d’Aguilar who descend from the Baron and who came to England and HK. There do seem to be some similarities in their name changes but ...

Dear All, It is nice to write again on this page. Recently I went to Torino and met with William Yehudha De Oliveira who is a member on this group. We went to the archives to try to find some information on my ancestors in Torino. These ancestors are the Melhado and Valabrega. I was interested to try to find the first name of the assumed Valabrega wife and to trace the Melhado ancestor Salomon bac...

Hello all, Ton Tielen kindly assisted in finding this ketubah for Isaac Sacutto / Zacuto and Rachel Falcao. I thought Rachel's father is maybe Joseph but couldn't read it easily. Could someone please help in reading it to determine both Isaac and Rachel's full names (ideally their fathers are mentioned) and any reference to a notary? I attach the marriage bann tooThank you !

Good morning all, Michael Waas has been helping me to investigate the riddle in the birth of Abraham Sara Henriques. He was married twice in the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue in Amsterdam and so his birth would likely have been legitimate. However, there is no father mentioned in his birth and his ketubot list his name as Abraham Sara Henriques. Could someone please help by reading this birth r...

Dear All, I am in need of your good counsel and it will help me to solve a question I have been working on since May. These four ketubot, kindly found by Michael Waas, are for the Senior Coronel family and both correspond to related but slightly different lines. My main aim with these is to determine detail on the parentage of the people in question. All exisiting records have problematic or incom...

Sorry all, annoyingly when I uploaded my file again my message disappeared. Thanks to Michael Waas I was lucky to receive the prenuptial agreement between Sara Ledesma and Moses Aron Henriques from 1760. Michael saw that the agreement was mentioned in the ketubah copy which I found thanks to Ton Tielen's post yesterday. It is in Dutch which unfortunately I do not speak and I cannot read the callig...

Hello!Happy New Year!I wonder if someone can please help me interpret this document found by Jarrett Ross. It is a testimonial of descent for a Torino sephardic Jew called Judah Salamon Melhado b.1720 in Torino (Turin) and died in 1771 in Amsterdam. I have transcribed it as best as I could however there is some calligraphy I cannot understand. I also did a google translate which appears quite conf...

Hello again, I am now trying to establish with some more concrete evidence the line for Benvenida Mordechai Levy Montezinos b.1730 d.1790.I have found Oudekerk records that attest to the marriage between her father Mordechai Isaac Levy Montezinos b.1689 d.1785 to Judith de Jacob Falcaho (Falcao) daughter of Jacob Joseph Falcao and Benvenida Moses Rodrigues. Whilst it appears on the marriage record...

Dear All, Thanks enormously for your help on my last post and I hope to hear from you more. I have another interesting riddle that maybe someone may have an idea on, perhaps Gigi Del Monte or others well versed with Italy or Egypt. When I was in Livorno and I went to visit the cemetery I arrived to look for Nunes Vas and Meldola who are all ancestors on my father's side. However I turned to my rig...

Dear all, Really pleased to now be part of this group, thank you. Like many of you I am a Nunes Vaz, Senior Coronel, Meldola and Henriques descendent amongst other names. I have many questions and if you don’t mind I will drop them in line by line slowly so as not to bombard you. I was lucky to find more details on the paternal line on my Henriques side who I trace only so far as Bayonne. Sara Mos...
